Teaching

Teaching is something that I am very passionate about. My hope is that students will leave my class – regardless of the particular subject matter – with a deeper and broader understanding of public policy and political science principals, a feeling of confidence that they did the best work they could, and the knowledge that they truly learned something valuable from my course. I strive to inspire in my students – the way several of my undergraduate professors did for me – not just the love of a single subject, but a love of learning and consuming knowledge that they can take with them through life.

  • I really enjoyed utilizing all sorts of different types of media to learn. It gave me several ways to view the issues we discussed.
  • This has been one of my favorite classes at Purdue. Ms. WK is amazingly knowledgeable and dedicated to the course. She respects the students and the students respect her—everyone I have talked to in this class really enjoys having Ms. WK as an instructor. The course material is extremely helpful and in-depth, and her feedback (notes on policy proposals, office hours, etc.) is impressively detailed. When an instructor truly puts effort into a class, it does not go unnoticed. Ms. WK, thank you so much for caring about your students and for being a great role model. I wish you luck on the future with your fellowship and everything else! Any students that haven't taken a class with you are missing out.
  • This has been one of my favorite classes. Ms. WK creates an environment conducive to class discussion and learning. That has been the most beneficial aspect. Being able to discuss topics and have student's voice their own opinion helps them understand the concept. Her availability for students whether it be through office hours or email is also noteworthy. She wants to make sure the students understand topics discussed in class and gives us many resources to do so. All the postings on blackboard help us apply in class concepts to daily events. This class has made me more comfortable voicing my opinion (in a constructive manner) and also opened my eyes to many women's issues. Before this class I was ashamed to say I was a feminist. The negative connotations made dissuaded me. However over this semester I found myself changing that point of view. When comments are made, (enlightened sexist jokes), I have began to speak up, and question those jokes which have lead to many great conversations. I want to thank Ms. WK for an amazing semester, and am deeply saddend that I will not have the pleasure of being in her class again (but congrats on the fellowship!!!)
  • Professor Kulzick is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. She lectures extremely well—her class is comprehensive but easy to follow. I really liked her entire class set up—especially the activities and videos we had to do for class. I loved Mock Congress—I think it was an really great way to wrap up the course. I immensely enjoyed your class Mrs. Walker-Kulzick and I think you're an excellent lecturer and professor. I learned so much about life in your class and I wish you the best. I will definitely come see you during your office hours next semester, it was an absolute pleasure being in your class.
  • The instructor presents the material very thoroughly. Furthermore, the instructor ensures that everyone has a chance to communicate any problems, misunderstandings, or questions in regards to course material. She goes out of her way to help establish a firm understanding of course and extended material to anyone who asks.
  • I have no objections or criticisms for this class or instructor. Mrs. Walker-Kulzick and her class have enlightened me in the subject of women, politics, and public policy; and I know I will take her teachings with me throughout all aspects of my life for many years to come. She has piqued my interest in the subject so much so, that if I were to go back five years to my freshmen year, I would have focused a stronger concentration on the subject. I also feel that Mrs. Walker-Kulzick has inspired me to be a more productive and attentive student. To conclude, I thoroughly enjoyed this class and learned a plethora of valuable lessons from the instructor.
  • Ms. Walker was very fun & open to everyone's opinions! I also liked how she made the material relevant to everyone. Overall, her class has pushed me to talk about women's issues when I feel uncomfortable. Last semester, boys in my spanish class said sexist things when they participated in discussion and I couldn't understand why I got so irritated and no one else did. Because of Ms. Walker's class I have the knowledge and the confidence to say something when I feel like I'm being indirectly offended aka sexism, and I have no problem doing so! Not only has this informed me of women's issues, but also relating these things back to African American oppression in the United States. Thank you Ms. Walker!
  • Ms. WK is so unbiased it's incredible. If I were up there teaching this stuff I'd seriously be rolling my eyes so many times at some of the stubborn comments that are made in class. She is super patient, though, and never takes a side. I think this is a good quality for an educator, because it encourages everyone to still feel included and valued in the class, even if their opinions are way different than everyone else's.

This dissertation examines how policy advocacy networks attempt to reverse policy losses using subversive, indirect means. I identify and examine a strategy I call "passive-aggressive policymaking": policymaking that is indirect, deceptive, and intentional. I examine passive-aggressive policymaking in the creation of abortion legislation through a cross-national quantitative study of abortion legislation, as well as case studies that focus on the United States and Canada.
